COMMUNITY PRECEPTORSHIP BACKGROUND

The Community Preceptorship Taskforce was established to assess student performance on core cancer prevention and control competencies in clinical rotations. This group is comprised of faculty members that are responsible for various aspects of clinical education activities at their institutions. The ongoing activities of this task force have been to develop a comprehensive cancer specific health assessment to help in the training of medical students in the proper cancer prevention, detection and screening techniques; to plan and deliver faculty training experiences; and to identify and disseminate collateral resources to compliment and enhance community-based clinical training opportunities. This work stems from a series of community preceptor resource modules to assist in the development and assessment of learning activities in clinical ambulatory and primary care settings, entitled, Resource Modules for Community Preceptors and Undergraduate Medical Students. The resource modules are intended for use by community preceptors that work with third-year medical students, as all eight medical schools utilize community-based faculty for third year primary care clerkships.
