| Steering committee members guide the Principal
Investigator in the planning, operation, policy formulation, resource allocation, and
evaluation activities of the CATCHUM Project. Each steering committee member serves as a
liaison member of one of the workgroups or taskforces according to their expertise and/or
interest. Their Biosketches are contained elsewhere in this application. All will continue
to serve in their capacity on the steering committee, adding a degree of stability to the
momentum the project has developed. Another essential element to
the success of the CATCHUM Project has been the active participation of key faculty at
each medical school who have worked on workgroups and taskforces to produce materials and
share expertise These faculty "champions" donate on an annual basis
approximately 4320 hours of service to the project. They are the workforce that identified
the core competencies, developed the Standardized Assessment Exams, created the
instructional materials such as OSCEs and evaluation aids such as the Clinical Preceptors
Guides, and who lead the ongoing efforts to integrate more cancer prevention, detection,
and control education at their own schools. The participation of these key faculty,
especially those who are physicians, has been affected by the pressures managed care has
exerted at each school. To counteract some of these pressures, each school will be
provided with funds to partially defray the costs of faculty release time for
participation on workgroups and taskforces. Publications and contributions to the field of
cancer education will continue to reflect the intellectual leadership provided by the key
faculty.
The
UTMB Educational Cancer Center, through the CATCHUM staff, will continue to serve as the
core office for the support of the consortium. This legislatively mandated center is a
designated resource for statewide cancer education activities and affords the possibility
for developing sustained funding support for the expansion and continuation of CATCHUM
activities. It is administratively linked to the statewide Area Health Education Centers,
and through that mechanism, to the Health Professions Education Training Centers Alliance
affording additional opportunities for vital community connections and wider
dissemination.
