Pain can be managed effectively through relatively simple
means for the majority of the 8 million Americans who have
cancer. About one-third
of cancer patients experience pain and more than two-thirds of
patients with advanced cancer (cancer that has spread or
recurred) have pain. Failure to assess pain by both clinician and patient and inadequate
knowledge of pain management, are critical factors leading to
under-treatment of cancer pain, a problem in Texas as well as
the rest of the United States.
The Concept Curriculum on Pain for Medical
Undergraduates provides a comprehensive tool for educating
medical students on this newly emerging discipline. |
