History of the CATCHUM Project
Return to the Stages of Development Menu

1998-2003 (National Cancer Institute II)

Fundamental question. Can the substantive changes that have occurred be sustained long enough to show that they can produce graduates who can demonstrate competence and knowledge in cancer risk recognition, early detection, risk modification, and surveillance?

This 5-year period of NCI funding has been characterized by continuation of the changes that the CATCHUM Project has instituted.

Six specific aims guide the activity during this stage in the project:

  • maintain the infrastructure (steering committee, task forces that develop material resources and share expertise, and core staff)

  • continue to develop or adapt performance- focused learning materials (problem-based learning, standardized patients, and objective structured clinical examinations)

  • continue to integrate cancer prevention, detection, and control education into the undergraduate medical curriculum of each Texas medical school

  • continue to develop learning activities in clinical ambulatory and primary care settings

  • continue to identify, recruit, and prepare faculty at each school to serve as role models and to guide students in becoming effective agents for cancer prevention, detection, and control

  • continue to evaluate and disseminate the innovative and significant outcomes of the project, using the website to facilitate communication
